About Dr. Yew Oo TAN

Dr Tan Yew Oo is currently the specialist in Medical Oncology in private practice at Farrer Park Hospital, Gleneagles Hospital, Mt Elizabeth Hospitals and Mt Alvernia Hospital.

He runs a busy practice seeing patients with various cancers and offering them treatment with chemotherapy or targeted therapies; very often giving second opinions for difficult cancer cases.

Dr Tan has an established reputation in the field of Oncology. He is also a trained Hematologist.

After graduating from the University of Singapore, Dr Tan proceeded to the United States and Canada for his post-graduate residency/fellowship training in Internal Medicine, Hematology and Medical Oncology. Upon completion of his training, he was certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, Hematology and Medical Oncology and obtained specialist certification in Internal Medicine and Hematology and awarded Fellow of Royal College of Physicians of Canada in 1975.

Dr Tan returned to Singapore and joined the Faculty of Medicine, National University of Singapore, as a Lecturer and was rapidly promoted to Associate Professor and Professor of Medicine in 1991. He was promoted to the Chief of Medicine at National University Hospital (NUH) and Head, Division of Hematology-Oncology at NUH. He was instrumental in setting up the specialty of Medical Oncology at Singapore General Hospital and later National University Hospital.

During his tenure in the university, he published extensively and was invited as a speaker at regional and international medical meetings. He resigned from the public sector to go into private practice in 1993.

Even whilst in private practice, Dr Tan remains active in medical education and postgraduate training. He served in many specialists committees in Academy of Medicine Singapore, and Ministry of Health. He has been involved in several post-graduate examination boards. He served in Board of Directors of Singhealth Pte Ltd and currently sits on the Board of Directors of Eastern Health Alliance. He is serving in the Ministry of Health MediShield Life Council, Agency for Care Excellence (ACE) and Proton Beam Therapy Advisory Committee (PBTAC). He has been invited to serve in Advisory Boards of many pharmaceutical companies.

He is passionate about improvement in disease free interval and overall survival of advance cancer patients and he participates in Phase III clinical trials on novel anti-cancer agents.

He continues to be invited to lecture at many Singapore and regional medical conferences and seminars.

On the education front, Dr Tan conducts training to medical colleagues.
