About Dr. TAN Siong San

Adjunct Assistant Professor Tan Siong San is a Senior Consultant Surgeon with 20 years of clinical experience in the public healthcare sector.

Dr Tan graduated from National University of Singapore School of Medicine in 1999. He received a comprehensive training in General Surgery and Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) Surgery in Changi General Hospital and Singapore General Hospital. In 2008, Dr Tan was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh upon successful completion of his Advanced Surgical Training.

Dr Tan was awarded the prestigious Singhealth Health Manpower Development Plan Award in 2010 to pursue further training as a Clinical and Research Fellow in Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) Surgery and Liver Transplantation at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Linkou, Taiwan. Hepatitis B liver cirrhosis leading to liver cancer is prevalent in Taiwan and Dr Tan had the opportunity to hone his surgical skills in the treatment of liver cancer.

Upon his return from Taiwan in 2011, Dr Tan was appointed the Director of HPB service in Changi General Hospital, a position he held for 9 years. Under his watch, a full-fledged HPB team was formed which expanded its capability to include Minimally Invasive HPB surgery. While maintaining his proficiency in General Surgery procedures such as hernia, stomach and colon resections, Dr Tan’s main focus is on providing the best surgical care for patients with HPB conditions. Due to the complex, risky nature of HPB surgeries, it is important to have personalised care for each patient. Dr Tan is dedicated to caring for his patients with integrity. His excellent surgical skills, meticulous attention to details, and professional collaboration with a network of trustworthy specialists, will guide patients towards the path of recovery. Dr Tan is passionate about training the future generation of doctors, being a Clinical Core Faculty Member and Program Evaluation Committee Member in the Singhealth Residency Program for General Surgery. He is also a Clinical Teacher and Examiner for Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine (National University of Singapore) and was awarded the Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence for academic year 2008/2009. He was conferred the title of Adjunct Assistant Professor by Duke-NUS in 2019.
