Strong Expertise in Keyhole Surgery

Dr Tan Chun Hai is a Stomach cancer, Bariatric and General Surgeon practicing at Gleneagles hospital Singapore. He is accredited to treat patients in all private hospitals in Singapore.

His clinical expertise includes use of keyhole or minimally invasive surgery in Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery, stomach cancer surgery, gallbladder stones, abdominal and groin hernia, appendicitis. He is also well versed in Emergency and Acute care surgery for the abdomen and general surgical conditions.

Other conditions he treat include abdominal pain and bloating, gastric pain, cancer screening, reflux heartburn symptoms, constipation, abnormal loss of weight, skin lumps and abscesses.

Dr Tan graduated from University of Melbourne and completed his surgical training in Singapore. He was conferred fellowship in the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh in 2015 and accredited by Specialist Accreditation Board (SAB) in Singapore as Specialist Surgeon in the same year. In 2016, he was awarded Health Manpower Development Plan (HMDP) by Singapore Ministry of Health (MOH) to advance his training.

Double Fellowship Training

He completed his Fellowship in Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery in Taiwan Min Sheng Hospital, Asia-Pacific Endoscopic Bariatric Surgical Centre under the tutelage of pioneer and world-renowned surgeon Professor Wei-Jei Lee. Dr Tan also trained with his mentor Dr Anton Cheng, father of Bariatric Surgery in Singapore for more than 5 years before taking over his Bariatric Surgery Department. To date, Dr Tan has performed and assisted in more than 500 cases of Bariatric Surgeries. He is also well versed in revision bariatric surgery, converting previous gastric bands to sleeve gastrectomy or roux-en-y gastric bypass (RYGB), and from sleeve gastrectomy to RYGB.

Dr Tan then went on to do a second fellowship in laparoscopic stomach cancer surgery in Seoul National University Bundang Hospital (SNUBH), under the guidance of Eminent Professor Hyung-Ho Kim. In Seoul, Dr Tan had the opportunity to perform and assist in multiple laparoscopic gastric cancer surgeries and hone his surgical skills in the treatment of gastric cancer.

Dr Tan is the current President Elect for OMSSS (Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society of Singapore). He has been featured in Channel News Asia, Channel 8 Body SOS, The Straits Times, Lian He Zao Bao 联合早报and has multiple radio interview sessions over these years.

Dr Tan is known and sought after by his patients for his sincerity, friendly nature and personalized compassionate care for his patients. He believes that good surgical outcome is not the only important aspect of clinical care, but also accurate and good communication with the patient and family members to aid them in making informed decision with regards to their health and treatment options.

Research and Awards

Dr Tan is actively involved in research. In 2018, he won the Young IFSO (International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Surgery) award for his research in Bariatric & Metabolic surgery for Type 2 Diabetes. Dr Tan has multiple publications in peer-reviewed international journals, and has been invited to give talks in international and regional conferences.

ICOD, Emergency and Acute Care Surgery

Prior to joining Gleneagles Hospital, he was the clinical director and founded the Integrated Care for Obesity and Diabetes (ICOD) clinic in KTPH, integrating Bariatric Surgeons, endocrinologist, physiotherapist, dietician, psychologist, specialty bariatric nurse into a one-stop multidisciplinary team for the care of patients with obesity and diabetes. Dr Tan was one of the pioneers in Emergency and acute care surgery team in KTPH and has great depth of experience dealing with acute care and emergency surgeries.

Teaching Residents and Students

Besides his passion for clinical practice, Dr Tan firmly believes in teaching future generations of junior doctors and medical students. He was a senior clinical lecturer in Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore (NUS) as well as core faculty for Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Nanyang Technological University (NTU). He was also a teaching core faculty in the National Healthcare General Surgery Residency training program. He has conducted multiple endoscopic and laparoscopic workshops to teach local and overseas surgical trainees and surgeons.
