About Dr. Philip McGraw

Dr McGraw is a practising orthopaedic and trauma surgeon at Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital and Parkway East Hospital. His special interests and expertise include the management of all aspects of hip and knee conditions, in addition to general orthopaedic and trauma surgery.

Born and bred a Yorkshireman, Mr. McGraw studied Dental Surgery at Newcastle-UponTyne in the United Kingdom. Upon qualifying, he worked as a Maxillofacial surgical trainee before undertaking his dental fellowship at The Royal College of Surgeons London and then commencing his studies in Medicine at Manchester University. He subsequently decided to change tack and completed his training as an Orthopaedic Surgeon in the northwest region of England. Mr. McGraw completed his training by undertaking two fellowships in hip and knee surgery at Wrightington Hospital in the UK.He was appointed as Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Bury & North Manchester General Hospitals in 2012. Whilst at these hospitals, he kept up with the waiting list issues by dedicating his weekends to work in waiting list initiative lists at Wrightington Orthopaedic Hospital.

An opportunity arose to travel, whereby he has appointed as a Consultant at Alexandra Hospital and subsequently as Senior Consultant at the Ng Teng Fong General Hospital, which is now part of the National University Hospitals Group. He was appointed as the Divisional Head of Hip and Knee surgery and an Assistant Professor at the National University of Singapore. During this time, he pioneered the integrated care pathways for both total hip and total knee replacement. This optimised care for patients as shown by the Value Driven Outcomes study. He was on the National Committee looking at the delivery of elective hip and knee surgeries. He was also appointed by the hospital to sit on the Clinical Ethics Committee and by the Ministry of Health to sit on the Transplant Ethics Committee. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Mr. McGraw undertook voluntary weekend work providing medical care to foreign workers at their dormitories.

His passion includes teaching at all levels. Mr. McGraw has hosted international lectures and workshops teaching surgical techniques for orthopaedic residents and has served as examiner for medical undergraduates and post-graduate orthopaedic trainees.

Mr. McGraw has published scholarly articles in international peer reviewed journals, and has undertaken presentations at international conferences.

With his experience in Value Derived Care and Integrated pathways he is keen to find avenues to implement these values relating to patient-centred care within the healthcare system, especially in a dedicated orthopaedic unit driving novel and improved pathways for the patient. To this end, he strives to deliver high quality care which is safe and cost effective.

He specialises in the following procedures:
• Knee arthroscopic surgery
